Bea Beaman
Bea Beaman (They/Them) is a Chinese-American choreographer from Shanghai, China. They trained as an entertainer in all aspects of the performing arts with various agencies in China before starting their choreography journey at St. Olaf College. In addition to their background in popular and social dance styles, they studied modern, ballet, and jazz in college.
Bea has a special interest in partnering. They see it as a means of connection and trust with their fellow movers. They have studied partnering with Matt Del Rosario, Brianna Rae Johnson, and Jeffrey Peterson, and have incorporated partnering in their narrative works.
Along with their choreography, Bea has experience in music production, lighting design, and stage management. With this interdisciplinary skill set, they have created dance works alongside the composition of the music, and designed lights for the works as well.
Bea’s work has covered a range of topics: their own experience with mental illness, Camus’ ideas of absurdism, and a call for compassion. Their work has been shown in the ACDA North-Central Regional Conference, the Companydance Spring Concert, Cendrillion the Opera (2023), Big Fish the Musical (2025), as well as a site-specific piece in the St. Olaf pool.
Bea aims to use their choreography as a means of communication, allowing space for their audience to resonate with the work. In their rehearsal and teaching process, Bea emphasizes the understanding of the philosophy behind the work and movement style along with the movement. Bea believes that intention is what gives movement life - it’s the spark that makes it dance.
